Earth Odyssey for Youth (EOFY) was a non-profit organization offering worldwide travel opportunities to at-risk American youths. The target audience, therefore, included both teenagers and the faculty and administrators that would be recruiting them.

We chose to use bright colors and a simple design, and there was a slideshow of images on the “splash” page. (Images were generously donated by ©Stockbyte.)

A frameset was used to allow the top and bottom elements to remain in a fixed position as the content changed from page to page. This same effect can now be accomplished using Cascading Style Sheets (CSS).

Self-promotional Flash website

I created my first promotional website in the year 2000 using Flash, then made by Macromedia, now owned by Adobe. Flash players were not yet in common usage, but I was targeting other graphics professionals that were likely to have the plugin installed. I provided an alternate HTML site to which other users would be redirected, in which I did not include my samples of multimedia animations.

Embedding movies into a website, at that time, was still a challenge. Most users were still on dial-up connections, and browsers did not support the variety of file-types they do today. I chose to convert the movies and animations I had made in Adobe Premiere, Adobe After Effects, New Tek Lightwave, and Macromedia Flash and Director, into Quicktime format before embedding them into the Flash website.

Kaja’s Happy Tails website

Kaja’s Happy Tails provides both pet services and pet portraiture. Before developing the website, we first worked together on a logo and nameplate. We then created a WordPress site with information about the pet care services offered, her contact information, and examples of pastel pet portraits available by commission.

Each page of the site was graced with one or more of her lovely pastels, and this gave the entire site a cohesive feeling. The colors and content of Kaja’s artwork added immensely to the overall look of the site.

Kaja learned how to add scans of her newest pastel portraits into the galleries for herself, sparing her the inconvenience of contacting (and paying) her webmaster, and allowing her to keep her portrait portfolio fresh.

iYoga website

iYoga Studio first needed a logo, and then needed a website with which to communicate with their students.

It was important that the students easily be able to find up-to-date schedule information for the classes being offered. I suggested the use of Google calendars so that the other Yoga instructors could keep the information current.

We also included an embedded Google map to the studio’s location.

4G Consulting website

4G Consulting, LLC, provides environmental services to the U.S. government. There is little reason for anyone other than governmental agencies to view their website, so we chose to keep the deign simple and informative.

Because there were very few graphic images to use, the left sidebar includes a slow-moving slide-show of four photographs of U.S. landscapes. Also, in the background of the main content, there is a light drawing of a globe, reminding the viewer that the company’s work involves global concerns.

Annie Fink Designs website

Annie Fink Designs needed a start-up website while getting their business off the ground. They were not yet ready for a shopping cart site, but wanted a place to send prospective buyers for examples of the women’s accessories they were then offering. They wanted buyers to be able to contact them via email for further information.

I started by designing a logo that used the client’s choice of colors and fonts, integrating the tagline “wear your heart on your sleeve.” We worked together to create content for the pages that would surround the product pages. For imagery, I felt we needed more than catalog shots, and since Annie Fink herself was highly photogenic, with a background in theater and modeling, I snapped a number of photographs of her wearing the primary product — Annie sleeves.

Later, when the company had grown and was ready to offer online sales, I assisted them in finding a student who could create an inexpensive shopping cart site for them. My goal was for them to be able to maintain their product catalog themselves, so we chose to have him create a Joomla!™ site using VirtueMart™ for the shopping cart.
